We often think of consequential decisions as actions, but sometimes, they are words.
Leadership gives words reach. And a leader's words do not end when they are spoken. They are heard, interpreted, repeated, amplified, and sometimes acted upon.
A statement can become an interpretation. An interpretation can become a belief. A belief can become permission. And permission can become action.
What follows may set in motion consequences the original speaker never imagined.
Intention does not erase consequences. Nor does influence guarantee control.
This is what makes leadership consequential.
The decision is not simply what to say, but whether we have exercised the discernment to consider what may follow.
The greater the reach, the greater the responsibility to consider the cascade.
The freedom to speak does not diminish the responsibility to consider what speaking may set in motion.
